Après avoir reçu du musée d'Auschwitz une valise ayant appartenu à une jeune prisonnière juive, une enseignante japonaise et ses élèves se lancent dans une enquête passionnée pour découvrir qui était cette petite fille, Hana Brady. Ils apprendront ainsi l'histoire des Brady, une famille tchécoslovaque décimée durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, dont il n'est resté qu'un seul survivant, George, le frère d'Hana. Avec l'aide de George, les jeunes élèves reconstituent le récit de la courte vie de la petite fille. Leur enseignante se sert de cet exemple particulier de l'histoire de l'Holocauste pour les sensibiliser aux dangers de l'intolérance face aux différences.

Last year, we at FIFEM got together with The Gazette in order to offer Montreal’s English-speaking families the opportunity to enjoy great films in their original English versions. The trial turned out to be a great success, and thanks to your enthusiastic response, “The Gazette Presents” is back for another edition at FIFEM!
Tomas, a frail, shy eight-year-old boy, has been living a solitary life in a drab orphanage. Maire O’Donnell, whose smile and spirit light up the darkest room, comes into his world and his heart. Before he knows it, Tomas is on a boat, sailing to wind-swept Corrie Island off the coast of Ireland, where he meets Alec, Maire’s reticent husband who cannot hide his disappointment with the boy. 
Willy is terrified about moving into the family’s new house. He’s convinced it’s filled with evil space aliens out to get him. In response to his longing for someone to save him, Gooby comes to life as a big, lovable, cruffy creature who quite possibly may be more frightened of the world than Willy. The two new pals embark on hair-raising adventures and learn about courage and the power of friendship.
Once Jennie had everything. She had two bowls to eat from, two pillows, and for cold weather, a red wool sweater. She even had a master who loved her. But Jennie didn’t care. In the middle of the night, she packed everything she had in a black leather bag with gold buckles and looked out of her favourite window for the last time…
This is the story of two young children who grew up in pre-WWII Czechoslovakia, and the terrible events that they endured just because they happened to be born Jewish. Based on the internationally acclaimed book, the film is an effective blend of dramatic and documentary techniques. For this is a Holocaust story unlike others: it provides a contemporary global perspective and lessons to be learned for a better future.
